Robert Alan “Bob” Cohen, 87, of Hernando, Florida (formerly of Portland, Maine) passed away on September 13, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones, after a valiant long-term battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.
Bob was born on April 4, 1938 to Charles and Gladys Cohen and was raised in South Portland, Maine where he attended local schools, graduating from South Portland High School in 1956. He received a bachelor’s degree in Business from Boston University in 1960 and a Doctor of Laws degree from Boston University School of Law in 1962. After graduating, he joined his father in the practice of law in Portland, Maine under the firm name of Cohen & Cohen. He was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Commercial Law League of America, the Maine State Bar Association, and the Cumberland County Bar Association.
Bob was very active in the community, being a former President of both the Portland Lions Club and Torch Club of Western Maine. He was elected to the Portland School Board in 1977 and served until 1981. Bob was a former Board member of the United Way of Maine, volunteered as a girl’s softball coach for his daughter’s softball team and was an original member of the Woodland’s Golf and Country Club.
Bob retired from law to Citrus Hills, Hernando, Florida, where he became a Financial Planner and tutor in the Citrus County School Department. In Florida, he was a former President of the Citrus Hills Civic Association, a member of the Cirtus Hills Golf and Country Club and a member of the Rotary Club of Inverness, where he served on the Inverness Rotary Scholarship Committee.
Bob was an avid golfer, scoring two holes in one. He enjoyed sharing many laughs, jokes and company with his Citrus Hills golfing buddies and their wives on and off the course. He was a passionate Red Sox and Patriots fan. He suffered along with other Red Sox fans until 2004. He often jokingly referred to the Red Sox as the “Red Flops” when they lost, which always amused his grandchildren and friends.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Gladys Cohen. He is survived by his long-time companion, Carol Barnes; his three children, daughter Jodi (husband Joel) Berenson of Bedford, Massachusetts and grandchildren Benjamin and Joshua; son Mark (wife Ellen Flaherty) Cohen of Old Orchard Beach, Maine and grandchildren Andrew, Adam (wife Izzy), Alec (wife Molly) and Aidan; and daughter Marcy (husband Jeff) Romani of Natick, Massachusetts and grandchildren Alexandra and Zachary; his brother Norman (wife Linda) Cohen of Lexington, Massachusetts; step-daughter Shelli (husband Santo) DeSantos of Beverly Hills, Florida and her four children, Amber, Marah (husband Alex), Thomas and Everly; and his closest friend from his Portland Lion’s Club days, Paul Marshall of Portland, Maine, who he talked to every Saturday morning without fail. He is also cherished by his many friends, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Jimmy Fund or a charity of your choice.
