James Earl Hess Sr

James E. "Duke" Hess Sr., 86, of Inverness Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on December 17, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born December 1, 1939, in Kankakee Illinois, the son of Jacob and Rowena (Pruitt) Hess.

At age 23, Duke proudly became a union electrician, a career he loved and excelled in. He worked for Steven's Electric, LaMore Electric, and Pyramid Electric before he retired at age 57 from IBEW Local 176. His strong work ethic and dedication earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Everyone knew Duke for his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone!

Duke had a zest for life and a love for adventure. He was happiest on the open road, riding his motorcycle alongside close friends. Daytona Bike Week was a favorite tradition for many years. He also enjoyed the thrill of discovering treasures at flea markets and garage sales one of which led him to meet his wife, Renette (Loeffler) Hess. They shared 36 years together, and she survives him.

Duke's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his daughters Donica (Mark) Messier of Bourbonnais. IL, Lisa (Clarence) Motlow of Valrico, FL; his son James (Natalie) Hess of Tampa, FL; stepdaughter Karlie Watson and her daughter Evie of St. Petersburg FL. He leaves behind 9 cherished grandchildren: Rebekah Mabe, Courtney Myers, Jamie Hess, Jessica McTigue, Justin Motlow, Julie Gray, Dylan and Payton Hess all of Florida, and Michael Messier of Bradley, IL, as well as 11 great-grandchildren who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Judy McMorris; brothers Orville (Bill) Hess, Frank Hess, Cecil Myers, and Raymond Myers, and his son James E. Hess, Jr.

Duke will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his quick wit, and his unwavering love for his dogs, family and friends. Cremation rites have been accorded, and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Kankakee. Illinois.
