David John Barber 1941-2024

David J. Barber, 82, of Waltham, MA passed away on April 17, 2024, after a lengthy illness at his home in Hernando, FL, under the loving care of his family. 

David was born in Waltham, MA to the late Esther and Albert Barber. David was predeceased by his late wife Sharon Fowler, to whom he was married for 16 years; his daughter, Deborah Munro; and his siblings Carole Stolzenbach and Judith Hunt.

David is survived by his daughters Jennifer Ragucci, Kristin Barber and her life partner Tracy Galloway Sr., Hayley Steinmetz and her husband Michael; 2 stepchildren – Jeni and Samatha Fowler;  5 grandchildren – Douglas and April Munro, Micaela Finn Barlow and Lily Finn, and Jace Steinmetz; 3 great grandchildren – Bjorn and Lochlan Munro, and Cayden Barlow; and 7 siblings – Peter Barber and his wife Beverly, Alfred Barber and his wife Nancy, Robert Barber, Stephen Barber and his wife Marilyn, Mary Wells and her husband John, Susan Carestia and her husband Art and Paul Barber and his wife Susan.
 
David was a 1960 graduate of Waltham High School. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Turfgrass Science and Management.

In 1986, David was Golf Course Superintendent Associations (GCSA) President and a member for 59 years. He enjoyed a long career as Superintendent at clubs in the Greater Boston area. David hosted the LPGA Bay State Classic from 1991-1994 at the Blue Hills Country Club in Canton Mass. He retired from the Wellesley Country Club in Wellesley, MA where he hosted the Mass Women’s Open 1994-1997, the 1999 Mass Open and the Ouimet Tournament in 2002. 

David, along with many of his close friends, enjoyed golfing as a member of the Bad Golfers Association (BGA) in Citrus Hills, FL. He also enjoyed traveling to Aruba, and watching sports while sitting in his lanai enjoying a good cigar.
